Goal:
To provide a safe space for people (including racialized, homeless, low-income, and LGBTQ+) from the diverse neighbourhoods we serve to gather, make social connections, and participate in civic engagement and activities that build individual skills and foster a sense of community.
Breaking Barriers
The Breaking Barriers Program is an integrated approach to service delivery. Our staff provide leadership, programming, wrap-around support and referrals in the areas of life management, health and wellness, income security and housing. Staff work closely with clients to formulate individually tailored case plans, helping them set short and long term goals to stabilize the client and develop the skills, tool and resources necessary for them to thrive. Community Access Hub
The Community Access Hub is the Centre’s “Meeting Place” and offers community members a quiet area within the Centre to read books, newspapers, and periodicals. The Lounge offers a variety of seating options and visitors can also access the Cecil public WiFi.

Public Access Computers
The Public Access Computers (PAC) are located in the Community Lounge and are available for any community member to use. The PAC is supervised and supported by our volunteers and/or staff members and provides free computer and Internet access for general usage in one-hour intervals.

Monday Night Table Tennis
On Monday nights, the auditorium is open to the community, with table tennis for all ages. Members are encouraged to self-organized, and everyone is welcome to play or just come to socialize and meet other members of the community.

Income Tax Clinic
Every tax season trained accountant volunteers provide free assistance with filing personal income tax returns, for individuals and families living on low incomes. Services by appointment only – please contact the Centre in February to book an appointment and find out the criteria.

ESL Conversation Circle
This popular program links community members seeking to improve their English language skills with volunteer tutors who provide assistance with conversation, reading, writing, and pronunciation. The English Conversation Circle meets as a small group, with a volunteer tutor, to practice conversation skills. ESL tutoring takes place on a daily basis, with dates and times arranged to suit individual needs and schedules. Contact the Centre to apply.

Community Events
Community Events are gatherings hosted by the Centre of local organizations, businesses and politicians for a variety of cultural and social events and civic engagement activities (e.g. Chinese New Year, Black History Month, Indigenous People’s Day, Winter Holidays, town halls, ect.)
These community events will include food, activities, draws and educational information.
